Effingham County Fair

We've been at the fair almost every night this week which made us realize something other than the fact that they booked yet another country act to play the fair.  The Effingham County Fair is like one gigantic family reunion.

First, you see people that you know but don't see very often.  I saw people I graduated with and a friend that I have sort of lost contact with.  Plus, you see other people that are acquaintances that you may or may not see on a regular basis.  My parents were able to reconnect with classmates they hadn't seen in 10 or more years.

Second, the food is always great.  The smell of the Pork Producers or the corn dog vendor or the funnel cake booth is always fantastic.  I remember the food at my family reunions was always good eatin'.  Witt's BBQ is out there and the Pork Producers is always a stop on my food caravan.  In fact, the Pork Producers is probably the cheapest place to eat at the fair.

Third, since I'm politically minded, I notice that the fair is split into groups or factions just like larger families are.  You have the Democrats - which their booth this year seems noticeably empty this year.  You have the Republicans - busy, and selling shirts, buttons, and a chance at a grill as a fundraiser for the upcoming bloody primary season.  Then you have those that just want a corn dog, watch the tractor pull and don't care about any of it.

Finally, there are just gobs of kids running around the place.  The Midway seems to be the place to be, it always was when I was growing up.  It seems a bit smaller than when I was younger, but I bet I still can't knock down all the milk cans to win a prize.

I find it a little funny because a month ago I was saying I wasn't going to go to the fair because it's the same ol' same ol' every year.  Then the fair comes and here I've already been out there 3 times.  Reminds me of the ballpark.  I complain about the ticket prices, food prices, and beer prices, but once you're there, the sights, sounds, and smells make it all worth while.

See you at the fair!  I think I'm going to go watch the ponies run tomorrow...
