Hard To Port!!

My God, it must be hard being Arlen Specter right now.  He's despised by the GOP as a Benedict Arnold, and he is not accepted as a real Democrat as he faces a Democrat primary challenger.  He's being pressured to support EFCA now and is being pressured to stop supporting the health care reform bill.  Karma, Arlen.  That's all I have to say.

There are many different issues that we are currently facing and will soon face that the tyranny of the majority want to impose upon us.  These issues are like an iceberg.  An iceberg looks innocent enough on the surface, but the real danger lies underneath.  Imagine each one of these issues as an iceberg, and our economy, freedoms, and jobs as the Titanic.

Health care reform:  Sounds good enough.  Free health care for everyone.  However, the problems underneath this issue are what are dangerous.  Higher taxes, businesses dropping current plans, business getting taxed for not offering plans, adding to the deficit and debt, lose of freedoms to choose our doctors, coverage for illegal immigrants, etc.

Employee Free Choice Act:  Sounds like a winner from its name.  However, the meat and potatoes of this issue will cost workers their freedom to not join a union, the destruction of the secret ballot, loss of jobs as businesses close doors to avoid the headache of dealing with unions, higher prices to cover union benefits, etc.

Dream Act II:  The name of this issue sounds pretty.  However, granting amnesty to illegal immigrants will cost the US tax payer almost $2 trillion in social benefits (Social Security, Medicare, etc.).  Not enforcing immigration laws costs tax payers dearly.  Plus, over $18 billion sent their home country which is that much less pumped into our own economy.  Most of all, amnesty doesn't solve anything.  DC granted amnesty in 1986 and we still have a problem.

US Deficit and Debt:  Deficits are always bad, but what lies underneath is always worse.  At some point, the government will have to pay the piper and guess who they'll come after to pay for the mess - you and me.  There is no conceivable way to pay for all the spending we are doing, and even if we confiscated all the wealth of this country we still would not pay off the national debt.  Oh, and then there's the little fact that China owns 80% of our debt?  That's not a threat to our economy or national security?  Since we have a slim to no chance of seeing the Laffer curve put back into effect, we can expect higher taxes which cuts off money for expansion of business and conspicuous consumption that drives our economy.

Cap and Trade:  Cut down emissions and save the planet.  Sounds like a noble enough of a cause.  However, it will be at the cost of US jobs as businesses flock overseas where there are little environmental laws.  Or they move to Mexico and still enjoy free trade status and get to employ workers for about 99% less than a US worker.  Plus, DC will create a regulatory quagmire as they create a commodities on carbon emissions.  The penalties for non-compliance will be hefty and will stifle any expansion of business - ie, creating new jobs!  The 19th Congressional district will stand to lose 3,500 jobs and the costs to business will be $471 million if this Cap and Tax passes.

Energy:  Green technology to save the environment.  How nice.  However, green jobs actually cost jobs.  Green technology is more expensive - ask anyone that has bought a hybrid or Prius.  The United States sits on a vast oil and natural gas reserve both in Upper Great Plains and off our coasts, but because of environmentalist lawsuits, and government regulations, we can't tap them.  The use of sugar for alternative fuels in Brazil and elsewhere has created a shortage of sugar which has driven up the price of sugar to an all time high.  The use of corn as an alternative has driven up the cost of food products because of shortages.  We can make coal clean, but DC doesn't want to talk about it.  Nuclear power is safe and has been proven by Japan and France to be a viable source of power.  Wind power is good but costs plenty to create.  Geothermal is also great but again costs get in the way.  Solar is ok, but no sun equals no power.  GM's new electric 230 mpg car will overload already maxed out electrical grids - think blackouts and rolling brownouts during summer and winter.  I bet if DC would give massive tax breaks to companies to develop and implement green technology in a cost effective manner and to tap resources on this continent, we may have better results.  Instead, regulations, lawsuits, and ideology  will hamper any attempt at achieving true energy independence.

These are just a few issues.  Do you see how they sound great on the top of things but there is a nasty underbelly.  Politicians never think of tomorrow, only today.  They don't think about the secondary consequences of their actions as long as they get elected.  They vote for Cap and Trade and then pretend to be a conservative - hear me Mark Kirk?  Where's our Mr. Smith goes to Washington?  Instead we have members of Congress like Rep. Massa (D-NY) that saying he will vote against the opinion of his district whether his constituents like it or not.  I thought we were a representative government?  Massa forgot to get that memo I think and should be voted out in the next election.

We can avoid these "iceberg" issues if we vote for the right candidates and pressure party leadership in both political parties to change their tunes.  We see civil action taking place right now in the town hall  meetings, the tea parties, etc.  The people are angry and Congress and the White Hosue should listen up.
