They struck oil in the US Gulf of Mexico...again. BP found that it may contain 3 billion barrels worth of oil. They estimate that it will increase production by 1 or 2%. Seems small but it is very important. Can you imagine if we tapped the Bakken oil field, the Gulf of Mexico, coastal areas, other areas newly discovered here in the US?
Independence from foreign oil can be achieved if the environmentalists and their liberal pals in DC would let us. It will take time in order to develop these areas, but it should be done quickly. Once we are independent (or as close as possible) from foreign oil, the profits gained can be diverted to researching and implementing new energy technologies. I didn't say windfall profit tax, but we should encourage these companies to develop and utilize new energy tech.

It's not just that the profits from current production can be used to find new ways to produce energy, or that "we" should encourage that. It's that the marketplace will encourage it as oil becomes harder to find, produce, and sell.
The Obama-Gore radicals want to artificially force a change that will happen naturally, and when it happens naturally will do so without government assistance.
