Obama's Israel Problem
President Obama met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the meeting seemed to go well enough. Then, Obama - minus his teleprompter - had a Joe Biden moment during an interview while trying to explain why Israeli's don't trust him that much. He gave this reasoning:
Obama seems to be so full of himself, he cannot look at how he has turned 50 years of alliances and mutual understanding with Israel and thrown everything out the window. In case President Obama happens to read this, let me recap his mistakes for him - in no particular order:
=== Hillary Clinton tells Netanyahu to stop building settlements in Jerusalem because it makes the Palestinians angry. Netanyahu to his credit fired back saying, "The Jewish people were building Jerusalem 3,00 years ago and the Jewish people are building in Jerusalem today. Jerusalem is not a settlement. It's our capitol". Hillary may have said it, but she serves as Sec. of State under Obama so it's still on him because he did nothing to settle the dust up.
=== During the last visit by Netanyahu, Obama left the meeting early and left the Israeli PM to sit and wonder where the President went and why the President would treat another head of government the way the President did. Maybe that came up in this last meeting, but I don't see Obama apologizing for anything. Just another slight toward our ally Israel.
=== When the Israeli Navy boarded a flotilla ship trying to crash the naval blockade of Gaza and killed some people on those ships AFTER being attacked by those on board, the US demanded an explanation and the US did nothing to defend Israel from the "outraged" European and Muslim nations.
=== Recently, the US backed a United Nations resolution urging Israel to open its nuclear facilities to inspection and also become a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by signing the treaty. The US has never pushed for Israel to sign the NNP Treaty, while Iran is a signatory and is blatantly disregarding the rules set forth in the NNP Treaty.
And Obama wonders why Israelis don't trust him? Obama's middle name has little or nothing to do with that mistrust. Israel is surrounded by countries that would love to see Israel wiped off the map and Israel has fought several wars to protect its mere existence. A year and a half into the administration, and they still have no clue what is going on.
" ...some of it may just be the fact that my middle name is Hussein, and that creates suspicion."You have got to be kidding me. Obama offers the "I'm not racist, I have a black friend" argument in trying to prove his Israeli street cred. From the same interview:
"Ironically, I've got a Chief of Staff named Rahm Israel Emmanuel. My top political advisor is somebody who is a descendant of Holocaust survivors. My closeness to the Jewish American community was probably what propelled me to the U.S. Senate"Not sure I'd be pinning my hopes on Rahm Emmanuel. Remember, when Rahm traveled to Israel recently, he needed extra security - and it wasn't because people wanted his autograph. In fact, Rahm was met with heckles of being an anti-semite. I'm pretty sure that if you were pushing pro-Israel policies, you would not be greeted the way Rahm was.
