Daisy Ad Revisited
In 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson ran an ad against Barry Goldwater which has gone down in infamy as probably the worst scare/attack ad of all time. If you haven't seen it, it's probably because it ran just one time before it was pulled. Some of you may be old enough to remember the ad, others like myself, have studied it in our history and political science classes. Take a look at the infamous 1964 Daisy Ad for yourself:
1964 Daisy Ad
The left claims that the Tea Party, conservatives, and Republicans have been using fiery rhetoric regarding "socialism" and playing scare tactics with the voting public against Obama, Pelosi, Reid and others. However, the words in the Daisy Ad seem to sound like Obama, and other leftists hitting the airwaves and stumping for Democrat re-election. The left, out-fundraised and out spent, claims PACs like Crossroads GPS and the US Chamber of Commerce has been using anonymous "foreign money" to buy ads against Democrats. Elsewhere, the left claims the GOP want to take away Social Security, Medicare, and healthcare for children. It's always about the children! Similar to the scare tactics in 1964? Here is the voice over by Johnson in his Daisy Ad:
(As the nuclear explosion goes off) "These are the stakes. To make a world in which all of God's children can live or go into the garden. We must either love each other or we must die".Then an announcer comes across:
"Vote for President Johnson November 3rd. The stakes are too high for you to stay home."How is this much different than what Axelrod has been doing? How is this any different than Obama asking minorities, women and the young people to make sure they get out and vote for his party to stay in power? In fact, Axelrod said just recently:
...secret donations to outside political groups are “a threat to our democracy,” singling out the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for criticism less than a month before elections that will determine control of Congress. The problem, Mr. Axelrod, is not the money being spent this year. The problem is that you, Obama, et. al have not listened to the people. The promises you made: universal health care resulted in higher insurance premiums/dropping of coverage, your stimulus package would result in lower unemployment but hasn't made a dent in the number of unemployed, your shovel ready jobs you promised do not exist, and I could go on and on. In most circles, a promise unkept is a lie, but to the left, it's all politics. The simple fact of the matter is that electoral change is coming November 2nd and there is nothing that Obama, Axelrod, Pelosi or anyone else on the left can do about it. I'm actually surprised the DNC hasn't asked Alan Grayson's ad people to put together a 2010 version of the Daisy Ad. I take that back. I should have said I would not be surprised. Two weeks until Election Day, and I have no expectations that the left has run out of mud to sling - because they sure can't run on THEIR record and THEIR economic policies and they know all too well at this point that they will be held accountable!
